Winter is coming, and that means it’s time to break out the fluffy blankets, hot chocolate and curl up near a crackling fire or a freestanding fireplace.
There’s just one problem: you don’t have a fireplace.
Fortunately, that doesn’t need to halt your quintessential winter experience. Instead, invest in a freestanding fireplace.
We’ve gone through dozens of reviews so that you don’t have to. The results are in, and we’re ready to present the best freestanding fireplace for your home — read on:
What Makes a Great Freestanding Fireplace?
To understand how we selected the best fireplace, it’s important to understand what makes a good freestanding fireplace.
The biggest difference between a freestanding fireplace versus an ordinary fireplace is that it’s not part of your home’s original construction. Traditional fireplaces are attached to your chimney and have been engineered to draw heat, vapor, and gases away from the fireplace. This keeps the fire contained within the fireplace and preventing smoke buildup.
A freestanding fireplace doesn’t have a built-in chimney, so the design has to include a way to prevent heat and smoke buildup. Ideally, you should also have a fireplace that’s safe for children and pets to be around.
And naturally, aesthetics play an important role, too.
The Winner: Duraflame Electric Infrared Quartz Freestanding Fireplace
Our winning fireplace, the Duraflame Electric Infrared Quartz Fireplace, is the perfect combination of style, safety, and fireplace heat. It has the look of a classic wood-burning fireplace with all the safety features you need around your kids and comes in less than $200.
This freestanding fireplace is 24” wide by 23” tall by 13” deep. It features a durable metal body recalling old-fashioned wood-burning stoves and beveled glass door and side windows allowing you to view the fire from all sides.
We say fire figuratively--part of why this was our favorite safety pick was because it’s not a real fire, but rather infrared quartz with a 3D flame effect behind the logs. This allows you to get the heat and humidity of a genuine fire without worrying about animals or small kids burning themselves on the flames or unit.
It’s incredibly realistic, and with five different colors brightness, and speed settings to adjust the 3D flames, you can get exactly the type of crackling fire your heart desires.
The Duraflame isn’t messing around with heat, either. It’s an astonishingly effective space heater with coverage of up to 1,000 feet, effective as a zone heater thanks to the fireplace’s infrared technology.
The Duraflame also makes a smaller version that does not produce as much heat but is still a well crafted freestanding fireplace.
And did we mention it comes in a beautiful rust red! Of course, if you aren't feeling bold and loving the red it comes in black too.
Runner Up!
The Della 17" 1400 Watts Compact Freestanding Electric Stove Fireplace heater was our second favorite. If you are looking for a cheaper option, this fireplace is $79 and comes in white or black.
We love the stylish design and it gives off a lot of heat for the size.
It's made from metal and tempered glass. A lot of the freestanding fireplaces we looked at were made of plastic and we immediately did not approve of them. This fireplace is made of good materials for the environment.
